Tunes To Share #5

Browsing for some new tunes to appease my illness... its now been 2 weeks since I first got the sickness; the longest amount of time I think Ive ever had to fight something off! I think its probably a lot of State Of Mind = State Of Being; to be truly well, you have to be truly content...something that I am striving to find every day.

While each day I am inspired by the beautiful imagery and people of Blogworld, it is really the music that makes me leap out of my seat (haggardly swaying in my PJ's!). I have a particular fascination with this whole REMIX biz; most of the tracks that I find when perusing have been remade/mixed/mashed - this is, most times, the only way to score free downloads - when the track has been altered to within an inch of its life and is now so far removed from the original that it is now okay to mooch for zero dollero. I say that like its a bad thing but sometimes, SOMETIMES,  it just makes them better!! Ouch...

Here are some tracks that are not necessarily on high rotation for me yet, but have intrigued me enough to add them here to share. Ive included the remixed track that caught my ear and then the original track that is also as good in its own way - its weird though, i sometimes get this whole chicken/egg thing going on in my mind - when you hear the remix before the original; how does that change our view of either? Oh crikey ~ tangents! Get me off the cough med's!

Natty - Bedroom Eyes (Roots Manuva Remix)
Original - acoustic version

Micachu and The Shapes
Micachu and The Shapes - Lips - NTEIBINT REMIX (SoundCloud Link)
Some more goodies by this cool and quirky chick/band...

PLUS..... This most excellent track.... very old school Digable Planets; I want to hear more...no remix here, this is just the original in all its goodness!
Shabazz Palaces - Swerve...

MUSIC FEATURE; Friends

Don't you hate it when you find a new band that you like and cant find NOTHING on the interweb about them?? Try typing a Google search on 'Friends'...... thats basically all i know about them, but I LOVE this track and I wanna know more!! I found their MySpace page but there is nothing on it!! Grrrrr! This is a SoundCloud link to their released track "Friend Crush" (freakin awesome lyrics!) but there is also this cool, rough video of them playing live! This song has defintly made my 'tunes of the week' list! yeeah!

MIX TAPES 2011

So, here they are, the two mix cd's that I've been working on for the last few months. Ive finally had the time to finish off the covers and organise the mixes and I'm really happy with the final products. I wanted the Summer cover to be really simple but grungy, in crisp blues and turquoises, but decided at the last minute to add the fuchsia sunburst. My Autumn/Winter cover was based around vintage dressmaking pattern packaging, plus the tracks on this one have a kind of darkness to them that I wanted to come though in the design. Looking forward to passing these goodies on to my dear friends :-)

New Tunes To Share...

I grew up surrounded by music - my fondest memory is of, on sunny summery days, opening up all the french doors in the lounge-room and blasting jimi hendrix, soundgarden, santana, pearl jam or janis joplin out onto the front lawn, where I would lounge on cushions and draw or write or whatever.
My first true opening line to any new person I met, was 'what sort of music do you get into?'. It wasn't a question of what was cool, I just always felt that it helped me to get a better sense of the person. I was so excited to meet fellow music lovers, and could never understand those people who just didn't have a particular sound that made them want to get up, let loose and spaz out whatever kind of dance moves all over the lounge room floor!!
I have always made mix tapes - mostly back when they were actually TAPES, I didn't get into it as much when we all moved over into CD... I used to love making them for my boyfriend or friends, especially my sweet friend Abee; we were pen pals for years and would record some of our letters on tapes, along with any new music we had discovered (I seem to remember mixes of nirvana, pearl jam, pantera, pennywise and bad religion - grungy little bogan punks!)

These last 2 years I have gotten back into making these old mix 'tapes' once again. This time around, I am astounded by my absolute love of 'the new', exploring all kinds of new ways to hear, collect and buy new music. It has given me such an overwhelming sense of my own musical tastes and it constantly amazes me the way that a new track can just give me full body goosebumps, whilst also getting me bopping around my art room!
I have realised that I such have a cacophony of musical tastes, such a massive variety of music that at times I wonder if my mates will think my mix tapes are retarded! I don't care though!! I love it! Here are some goodies that are actually a part or my very overdue 'summer mix 2010-11'..... the autumn winter one is also on its way! Enjoy!

New Tunes To Share

Ooooh ~ The rain is falling and I must admit I am quite ready for the coolness of autumn, my very favourite time of year. I think these new tunes are quite befitting of my mood, slightly dark and brooding, inspiring layers and fire and red wine...

I particularly love the fact that the third track, 'Beat and the Pulse' by Austra falls under the newly created genre of WitchHouse (Pitchforks creation) ! I think it sounds quite witchy indeed!

The second track, Lykke Li's I Follow Rivers is one that has been hammered on BFM, but it has slowly penetrated my mind with its hauntingly beautiful underwater sounds.

And in first place today is the deliciously caramel vocal magic of Mayer Hawthorne, Green Eyed Love remixed by Classixx. The original was amazing but this is just sooo warm and bouncy and rolling in velvet blankets! Mmmmmmmm!

These decidedly dark tracks  will be featuring on my next autumn/winter mix tape.... enjoy my lovelies xo

Mixing it up a wee bit today. We have a beautiful folktune by the lovely Emily Jane White, combined with the dusky, dark and sexy beats of the very talented Jamie Smith (the XX) and lo and behold, whats that?? We also have a BEYONCE cover this week (What the??)- beautifully reworked by CEO. Enjoy! Will keep up from now on and remember to change tracks each week! MmmmmWah!

MIX TAPES 2010; and now............eternity......

I soooo had plans to keep this blog up but alas, teaching has once again drawn me into its mad web of... madness!!! I am spending all of my time making crazy resources for 'my kids' and going to meetings and keeping up with all the assessment stuff and omigod it is really all too much to consider coming back full time!!
I LOVE these kids man they are the coolest dudes out! They get all my jokes and they play MAD basketball and we laugh pretty much all day (except when Im telling them to stop daydreaming out the window!!) I wish teaching was always this fun! Im doing screen printing with them this week so might take pics of their progress. We were gonna make basketball singlets, but I think that might be a can of worms I DONT need during Report Writing Time so we are gonna make patches to stitch onto swimming bags and we are also gonna tackle t-shirt prints! WEeeeHoo! Showed them this Bre and Matt Vid (From etsy.com) and they flipped completely and said they would give me all of their pocket money if they could just make photosensitive screen prints!! As I said these kids are AWESOME!

My one, personal, creative outlet has been my latest Spring Time Mix CD that I have just completed! (Phew) I LOVE the cover - except all of the dumb print mistakes due to 'teacher brain'(mistakes are on the printed ones, not the one shown here).
If you would like one, let me know and I can send one to your corner of the globe!
So, Here it is in all its glory;

Summer mix is being created as we speak (is beaming through my ears at this very moment!) Dont miss the most joyful track of this summer El Guincho's 'Bombay'. Everytime I hear it, it just fills me with the delights of summer sun! Check out the crazy, sexy, saucy video via my 'Track of the Week' link :-) Peas to all xo
